TAILORED

01 Overview & Objectives
Bullet journals is a system where the user can organize events, and create tasks in an aesthetic they materialize. The appeal to bullet journals is their flexibility and customization, and embodies self-knowledge through self-tracking. Tailored is a calendar app that embodies the likes of a bullet journal.
The objectives I would like to achieve is creating a product a user will come back to or in order words - retention. As the primary function of any planner would be to refer to it daily - having the user constantly coming back to the product is crucial. Thus, I would like to state my hypothesis:
“If a product prioritizes customization and flexibility for the user, then the retention of a product would be higher and more effective.”
02 Problem Statement & Target Audience
Problem Statement: Design a calendar app that utilizes the qualities similar to a bullet journal - tailored to your everyday needs. How might we optimize the experience in using a daily product for the user?
Target Audience: As the driving force of this product is bullet journal, the target audience should also align with the demographics who use bullet journal. This would include a demographic of pool of people in their mid-20’s and predominantly female. According to Vox, bullet journal is loved by millennials - by people who like to have control.
03 User Persona
Meet Jane Doe, a young female college student.
Characteristics:
always running between classes
organized
perfectionist
Needs:
something she can always have on hand
be able to check off her to-do list on the go
Challenges:
Has too many notebooks to know where things are
Not enough time to sit down and create the “perfect” planner
Creating a persona helps in visualizing your target audience. When I created Jane Doe, I’m also visualizing all of the potential users for Tailored. The next best thing in creating a better understanding humans’ needs is interviewing themselves.
04 Interviews and Key Insights
From a group of 25 individuals, I asked them what they would like to see more from a calendar app. Key insights include:
“a more sleek design would make me want to come back to it more”
“I like bullet journals so much because I can really make it to be however I want it”
“Have more features”
These insights helped create a theme or aesthetic of the product itself. Creating a cleaner aesthetic to be used by both male and females while incorporating options to customize the app specifically to the user’s preferences.
05 Ideation
The features are inspired by the features a lot of bullet journal users tend to showcase. I wanted both the main attributes of a calendar and a bullet journal to shine through.
Feature 1: Add Event
A primary function of a calendar app is adding events to create one’s schedule. Referring to your schedule can be the only reason why users even open a calendar app or refer to their planner in the first place.
Design Goal: Create a feature dedicated to adding events and display the user’s schedule in an efficient manner.
How might we achieve this? Because adding events will be a popular feature to frequent, I would like to include it in the footer design. The footer design - or the bottom of the screen - is important as mobile users usually directly scroll or refer to the bottom. Because adding events is the building block to a calendar, incorporating it into the footer would be ideal for easy access. The feature itself should be a condensed click-and-enter information card for a speedy process.
Feature 2: Habit Tracker
A popular format for bullet journal is tracking down one’s habit, whether that be drinking water everyday or reading the newsletter - the habit tracker tailors to the user’s specific habits and tracks them down.
Design Goal: Design a habit tracker to keep progress of the user’s personal growth in preferred areas.
How might we achieve this? Create a tracker that has an easy to user interface. With a simple tap of the icon, confirm whether the user did the habit and refer to their progress in the footer to see their personal growth. Having this habit tracker on the same main card when you check the schedule would optimize meeting the user’s goals.
06 Prototyping
With the features in mind, I went to creating low fidelity wireframes.
With a skeleton, I went on to create high fidelity prototype screens for Tailored.
This project was inspired by a previous project that I wanted to revamp. Check it out to see my improvements and progress, it features animated infographics that were a pleasure to create.
